Diets. With so many fads, eat this not that, and overnight weight loss stories; it’s difficult to find a groove that works for you. Many diets offer bland options and watered-down favorites with an extra dose of struggle to fight your cravings. What if we told you those fatty, delicious items you crave can be integrated into your every day life. Cravings disappear when you’re eating good food that satisfies your pallet and increases your energy. Too good to be true, right?
We spent 6 weeks on the Keto diet to discover the good, the bad, and the ugly. Does it really work and what’s all this nonsense about the Keto Flu? Our journey started off rocky, but we couldn’t be happier with our results and how we feel. Cliff lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks while Cassie lost 12lbs. While not sustainable for life, Keto helped instill a balance into our nutrition plans.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE KETO DIET
Ketosis, a state normally found in long distance high endurance runners, happens when your body learns to burn fat for fuel and not carbs. This results in more energy and a happier you. Let’s get started.
WEEK 1 ON THE KETO DIET
You don’t realize how many of your favorite foods contain carbs until you’re living low carb. Peanut Butter- nope, fruit- forget about it, beer- how will we survive. Luckily, there was a ton of information on keto recipes, keto diet plans, and keto diet menus available to us. When you’re capping your carb intake at 20g a day you need all the help you can get.
Our first week was rough. The keto flu was real and drinking salty chicken broth to cure it was not a treat. The first few days, while we didn’t feel deprived between our bacon, cream cheese, and chicken thighs; our normal eating patterns were disrupted. We were angry to say the least, but we stuck through knowing the results would be worth the short term struggle. We also searched some keto cocktails!
WEEK 2 ON THE KETO DIET
By this week we were feeling great! Cooking every night was a struggle, so we invested our Sunday to keto meal planning. The results were easy, delicious, packable meals we could easily take for lunch and reheat for dinner. The keto meal planning saved our diet. The cravings for carbs subsided and the keto flu was over. We were satisfied with our meals (BACON!!) and didn’t feel hungry. Cassie also experienced trouble sleeping at night due to her increased energy.
WEEK 3 ON THE KETO DIET
I should have went to pastry school. Week three was still smooth sailing, but we needed to satisfy our sweet tooth. Keto deserts was our search term for the week and we packed our pantry with almond flour, sugar free chocolate, berries (yes you can have a few berries), sugar substitute (we tried many, but preferred Truvia) and lots and lots of cream cheese. We baked and baked and baked. keto cheesecake, keto brownies, keto fruit crisp, and keto peanut butter cups. At this point we could use a house cleaner to clean up our kitchen.
WEEK 4 ON THE KETO DIET
Still eating bacon and cheesecake. Still losing weight.
WEEK 5 ON THE KETO DIET
At this point we really missed beer, but we felt like new people. Our clothes fit better, our energy levels increased, and we indulged in a Coke Zero. We also bough a few new keto recipe books on Amazon.
WEEK 6 ON THE KETO DIET
The finish line had arrived, but we found ourselves not wanting to stop our diet. The way we felt far outweighed eating carbs. Plus we looked great! We fully understood why people were starting the keto diet and sticking to it.
OUR CONCULSION ON KETO
Keto diets are truly a way of life. You get addicted to the feeling a low carb lifestyle provides. It’s no wonder stars like Halle Berry, Kourtney Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jenna Jameson all follow the keto diet. We integrated a few simple carbs into our diet afraid the pounds would come piling back on, but we were surprised when our weight stayed the same. We also craved our feeling more than stuffing our faces into a bowl of pasta. Overall, we feel the keto diet is a great diet for anyone looking for a long-term lifestyle change and fast weight loss results! Share your keto stories using the hashtag #exssfitketo
